About the Program
The Master of Science in Mathematics at Drexel University provides a rigorous and comprehensive foundation in graduate level mathematics, preparing students for a wide range of opportunities in industry, government, and advanced academic study. The program offers both breadth and depth across core mathematical areas, while maintaining the flexibility for students to pursue advanced coursework tailored to their interests. Students benefit from an active and collegial department whose internationally recognized faculty conduct research in combinatorics, numerical analysis, probability, matrix and operator theory, mathematical biology, geometry, and partial differential equations.
The curriculum begins with foundational courses in Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, and Abstract Algebra. These courses establish the theoretical skills essential for understanding and applying advanced mathematical concepts. In the second year, students may customize their program by selecting electives in areas such as combinatorics, partial differential equations, numerical analysis, probability, operator theory, and mathematical neuroscience. This structure enables students to explore both pure and applied mathematical topics and to build expertise aligned with their intellectual and professional goals.
Students are encouraged to engage actively with the department’s vibrant seminar and colloquium series, as well as Drexel’s SIAM student chapter. These activities connect students with emerging developments in the mathematical sciences and strengthen their professional networks. While the MS degree can be completed entirely through coursework, students also have the option to pursue a master’s thesis under the guidance of a faculty adviser, allowing for a deeper exploration of a specialized topic.
Graduates of Drexel’s MS in Mathematics program often pursue careers across sectors that rely heavily on strong analytical and quantitative skills. These include finance, risk analysis, data science, statistical modeling, actuarial science, and simulation based fields. Employers of recent graduates from the department’s graduate programs include financial institutions, government research laboratories, software and technology companies, and defense related organizations—reflecting the program’s strong analytical orientation and the versatility of mathematical training.
