About the Program

The MS in Accounting prepares students to apply advanced accounting standards and professional judgment to analyze and resolve complex business questions. Students learn to use data analytics, data visualization, machine learning, and emerging technology tools to acquire, prepare, and evaluate financial and operational data that improves the quality of accounting analyses. The curriculum develops students’ ability to apply professional standards, including relevant codes of conduct, to identify and address challenges in practice with integrity, regulatory awareness, and responsible use of data and AI. Throughout the program, students strengthen their capacity to communicate technical and analytical findings effectively through written, visual, and oral formats tailored to professional audiences.

Students engage in an applied, rigorous learning experience that integrates analytical thinking, research, and professional practice. Coursework emphasizes evaluation of authoritative standards, evidence-based decision making, and the role of technology in modern accounting functions. Hands-on assignments allow students to analyze real-world datasets, build dashboards and reports, write executive briefs, and prepare research memos and audit documentation. Case studies, practice-oriented research, and project-based learning strengthen students’ ability to apply theory to realistic accounting and assurance challenges. A required experiential component—such as an internship, consulting engagement, or tax experiential learning opportunity—enables students to apply classroom learning in professional environments and build a portfolio of work demonstrating readiness for practice.

Graduates pursue careers across public, corporate, and not-for-profit accounting. Career paths include financial reporting/SEC reporting, technical accounting, controllership, cost and managerial accounting, financial planning and analysis (FP&A), internal audit/SOX, risk and compliance, assurance/external audit, and tax. The program supports preparation for CPA licensure pathways (subject to state board requirements) and provides a strong foundation for credentials relevant to practice, such as Certified Management Accountant (CMA).

Drexel’s MS in Accounting distinguishes itself through its integration of experiential learning, technology-rich coursework, and strong connections to the accounting profession. Students benefit from faculty who draw on industry expertise to design assignments reflecting contemporary accounting challenges, including the increased use of analytics, automation, and data-driven decision making. Drexel’s emphasis on applied learning ensures that graduates leave the program with both advanced technical knowledge and authentic professional experience—equipping them to enter and advance within a rapidly evolving accounting profession.
