About the Program
Students in the MS Sport Business will master core knowledge and develop skills across the fundamental business functional areas of professional sports organizations. They will be able to assess critical issues facing sports organizations and formulate perspectives on effective leadership, management, and decision making in sports organizations. Students will understand the unique place of the sports industry within society at large. They will develop an understanding of sport markets and pricing, as well as the fundamentals of marketing, and be able to apply these concepts to the sports industry. There are ample opportunities for experiential learning; classroom concepts are directly applied to real-world problems.
The department offers classes covering a wide range of business applications to sports. Classes are often presented online in a lecture/discussion format. Students have opportunities to participate in lectures, work together on group projects, and collaborate with professors. Many students take advantage of experiential learning opportunities such as residency classes, practicums, and consulting projects.
The program offers options covering a wide range of areas of study; students can match their skills, abilities, and interests with a specific niche within the sport industry. Examples include working in an intercollegiate athletics office or as a brand manager, sport marketer, or facilities and operations manager. Skills acquired include planning and directing athletic events and activities, organizing various components of event management, managing ticket sales and box office operations, overseeing game-day operations, and managing media relations and communications.
The greater Philadelphia area, and its location in the mid-Atlantic region, offers many opportunities in professional sports, college sports, sports agencies, sport media, and sport organizations. Drexel’s LeBow College of Business is an AACSB accredited school. Students will master all the skills expected of those holding a business degree.
