About the Program

The Reading Specialist Certificate Program prepares certified teachers to become Pennsylvania certified reading specialists, literacy coaches, curriculum consultants, and reading interventionists. Designed for educators who hold an Instructional I certificate in Pennsylvania or another state, this program develops expertise in comprehensive literacy assessment, instruction, and leadership to support diverse learners across all stages of literacy development. Please note that applicants are required to transfer in structured literacy coursework through Wilson or another approved provider. If an applicant has not completed structured literacy coursework/certificate of completion, one can obtain Wilson Certification through Drexel University through a number of options. 

Graduates will master evidence-based practices essential for literacy leadership. Candidates learn to select, administer, and interpret literacy and use assessment data to plan responsive instruction while collaborating with educators and stakeholders. The program emphasizes multisensory, research-based instruction in foundational skills including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and disciplinary literacy using developmentally appropriate strategies and assistive technology. Candidates develop expertise in supporting reading comprehension and writing across genres through explicit strategy instruction, text-based discussion, metacognitive practices, and the writing process. Through clinical practice, students implement evidence-based literacy interventions for diverse learners while selecting culturally responsive materials, engaging in reflective practice, maintaining ethical conduct, and communicating effectively with stakeholders.

Graduates pursue careers as Pennsylvania certified reading specialists, literacy coaches, literacy program and curriculum consultants in schools and literacy centers, and reading interventionists. Program completion with a grade of B or better in all courses, a cumulative 3.0 GPA, satisfactory field-based participation, and passing Praxis exam scores qualifies candidates for recommendation for Pennsylvania Reading Specialist Certification. The credits from the Reading Specialist Certification program can be transferred into the Masters in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum program with a Reading Specialist concentration. 

The program combines online coursework with hands-on field-based experiences that bridge theory and practice. Candidates complete in-person fieldwork in classroom settings, requiring clearances and field placement applications prior to participation in courses with clinical components. The capstone experience—the Drexel Summer Reading Camp—exemplifies Drexel’s experiential learning model. Students within a 60-mile radius design and deliver a free literacy camp for children in neighborhoods near campus, while those outside this radius create and implement a Drexel-approved literacy program in their home location. This signature experience allows candidates to synthesize their learning by developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive literacy program.
