About the Program

The Special Education Law & Advocacy Certificate prepares professionals to navigate the legal and policy foundations governing the rights of students with disabilities—and, in states where applicable, students identified as gifted or talented. Through coursework grounded in IDEA and related federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and court decisions, students develop essential legal literacy, evidence-based advocacy skills, and the professional dispositions needed to support appropriate educational programming. Participants interpret and apply key IDEA requirements and procedural anchors—child find, eligibility, evaluation, IEP scrutiny, placement, procedural safeguards, and dispute-resolution processes—to authentic school-based scenarios.

Students participate in a highly applied and collaborative learning model. Signature elements include scenario-based legal analysis, documentation and communication exercises, case-based team decision-making, and opportunities to examine jurisdictional policy variations. Learners actively engage with peers from diverse professional backgrounds—including teachers, administrators, school psychologists, behavior analysts, paralegals, legal advocates, and family advocates—gaining multi-stakeholder perspectives that reflect the complexity of real-world special education practice. Throughout the program, students define and refine their advocacy style and professional identity.

Graduates pursue a wide range of pathways. Many apply their training within schools, districts, and community organizations in roles involving compliance oversight, IEP facilitation, gifted education coordination, dispute prevention, or policy interpretation. Others transition into independent advocacy, mediation, or consultative practice, or use the certificate as preparation for further study in law, educational leadership, or policy. The curriculum equips graduates to navigate complex aspects of special education practice with clarity, purpose, and sound judgment.
