About the Program

Drexel School of Education offers a post-baccalaureate certificate in Teacher English as a Second Language for students who are interested in becoming an ESL teacher in a K-12 formal or informal educational setting, or for educators who want to deepen their knowledge and skills to effectively support English Learners. The Teaching English as a Second Language certification is an add-on certificate available to candidates that currently possess a Pennsylvania Instructional I or Instructional II teaching certificate. The ESL certificate program covers the theory and practice of second language education, the structure and sound of English, the design and assessment of ESL course materials, as well as broader topics related to how language identity and culture inform teaching English Learners.

Graduates are able to apply for the PA certificate and serve as ESL specialists inside and outside of schools. Completion of the program also includes required field-based experiences for each course and an action-research capstone project. Students are provided with assistance in securing field placements through the School of Education Field Placement Office that partners with multiple districts, schools, and organizations in the region.

Interstate agreements generally applicability across the US; however, prospective candidates outside of Pennsylvania are advised to check with their state authorities to determine whether this program is appropriate for their case. Clearances and field placement applications must be submitted before participating in coursework with classroom-based field components. Successful completion of all courses with a grade of B or better and 3.0 cum GPA, satisfactory participation in all required field-based experiences is required for recommendation for the Pennsylvania ESL specialist certification.

The program leverages Drexel’s experiential education model with practitioners in mind. The program is grounded in asset-based teaching and learning approaches to supporting English Learners informed by sociocultural, second language, linguistic, and culturally responsive perspectives.
