About the Program

The Leadership in Literacy Science & Systems Change program prepares educational leaders to design, implement, and sustain evidence-based literacy systems that improve student outcomes. Grounded in the Science of Reading, structured literacy, and implementation science, learners develop knowledge of literacy development, MTSS frameworks, and data-driven decision-making. Participants build competencies in analyzing literacy data, aligning curriculum and assessment, and leading implementation with fidelity. The program also cultivates leadership dispositions focused on equity, evidence-based practice, and accountability for student outcomes, preparing graduates to drive system-wide literacy improvement.

Students engage in applied, practice-based learning that connects directly to their professional contexts. Signature experiences include developing a comprehensive literacy implementation plan, analyzing real-world data, and designing professional learning systems. Coursework incorporates case studies, problem-based learning, and collaborative projects that reflect the complexity of leading literacy initiatives. A key feature is the application of implementation science frameworks, where learners assess readiness, plan for staged implementation, and monitor outcomes. These experiences ensure that students produce actionable deliverables that can be implemented in their schools or districts.

Graduates are prepared for leadership roles such as district literacy directors, principals, and curriculum leaders. The post-master’s certificate pathway is especially valuable for administrators who already hold an EdD, providing targeted expertise in literacy systems and implementation without requiring another full degree.
