About the Program

The Transformational Systems Leadership Superintendent Certificate prepares experienced educators to lead complex, adaptive school systems with a focus on equity, innovation, and performance. Candidates develop expertise in transformational and adaptive leadership, superintendent–board governance, districtwide instructional systems, labor relations, special education law, and school finance. The program emphasizes ethical decision-making, strategic planning, community and political leadership, and AI-enhanced data analysis, equipping graduates with the skills and dispositions to lead high-performing, equitable, and future-ready school districts.

The program features a highly applied, practice-based learning experience grounded in real-world district leadership. A 400-hour supervised internship, embedded across two courses, provides sustained, hands-on experience in budgeting, board relations, curriculum oversight, labor negotiations, and community engagement. Candidates engage in executive-level simulations, policy analysis, and strategic planning while working alongside district leaders. The integration of AI tools and advanced data systems enhances their ability to make informed, forward-thinking decisions in dynamic environments.

Graduates are prepared for district-level leadership roles, including superintendent, assistant superintendent, and central office executive positions. The program meets the academic requirements for Pennsylvania superintendent certification (Letter of Eligibility) and supports advancement across public and private school systems. It also provides a strong foundation for continued doctoral study and leadership roles in educational organizations, policy, and higher education.

Drexel University’s experiential learning model distinguishes this program by integrating rigorous coursework with immersive field experiences. Candidates apply theory directly to practice through internships, simulations, and real-time problem solving. With a strong emphasis on AI, systems thinking, and innovation—and supported by partnerships with school districts and practitioner-focused faculty—graduates are prepared not only to meet current leadership demands, but to lead transformational change in education.

Admission Requirements

A bachelor's degree and master’s degree from regionally accredited institutions: GPA of 3.0 or higher; A state-issued principal certificate; A completed application; Official transcripts from all universities or colleges and other post-secondary educational institutions (including trade schools) attended; Two letters of recommendation (professional or academic): One letter should be from a Superintendent (or another senior leader) from a district or school where you have worked. The letter should speak to your experiences in leadership roles, as well as any skills that would have a strong bearing on your success as a Superintendent; An essay describing why you're interested in pursuing this program; Resume; Copy of your state-issued principal certificate

Any student required to participate in a program field experience and/or internship as a component of their coursework will be required to submit all required documents with regard to background checks/clearance(s) and field placement applications.
