About the Program

The Master’s degree program in Special Education prepares professionals who are equipped with the fundamental concepts needed to effectively educate students with disabilities. Graduates will gain the skills and knowledge in the foundations of special education as a service delivery system of specialized instruction, assessment, intervention and instructional strategies, positive learning environments, collaboration with families and educators, and the legal and ethical underpinnings of professional practice, with a focus on applying research to real-world challenges. The program’s courses address all required state and federal regulations as well as the Pennsylvania General Standards for Special Education and the competencies and standards outlined by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

The program combines coursework with hands-on, practice-based learning opportunities infused throughout the program which prepares candidates for special education teaching in various educational settings, including public and charter schools, alternative programs, and specialized instructional environments. Utilizing a flexible online learning environment, experienced educators serve as faculty to bring real-world expertise into the courses. A capstone experience is a signature element of the program, [Vo1.1]allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills in special education to identify and address a critical area of practice with students with disabilities.

Graduates of the program are well-prepared to take on impactful roles supporting learners with disabilities in various educational settings, including public and charter schools, alternative programs, and specialized instructional environments. The program also provides a strong pathway for individuals aiming to deepen their knowledge of evidence-based special education practices and advance their careers within schools and related services. For those pursuing certification, the program offers a clear and supportive path toward earning a Special Education teaching credential, based on current standards and practical application. Graduates are equipped not only to enter the field but also to lead using data-driven decision making, appropriate educational practices, and collaborative problem-solving to improve outcomes for students with disabilities. The degree further prepares candidates for ongoing professional growth, including leadership roles, specialized instructional support positions, and advanced studies.

Drexel’s experiential learning model is a key feature of the Special Education program, offering the opportunity to directly apply learning to the special education classroom. The program provides advanced learning and classroom application in understanding the link between assessment and instruction and intervention; design individualized, data-driven instruction; lead collaborative teams; and advocate for inclusive, equitable practices.
