About the Program
The MS in STEM Education and Society at Drexel University equips educators to address societal challenges through innovative, interdisciplinary STEM learning and teaching. Bridging key research and innovation in STEM Education, Learning Sciences, and Science Technology & Society (STS), key areas of focus include environmental justice, cultural STEM practices, community-focused learning, and the role of technology in education.
The program emphasizes experiential learning, community engagement, and critical teaching practices to prepare students to integrate STEM experiences with real-world problem-solving. Core courses in the program survey topics, theories, research practices and knowledge in STEM Education and ask students to apply their developing perspectives. Interdisciplinary courses offer students perspectives on the depth and breadth that STEM learning can go, provide exemplary project-based learning experiences of key phenomena to build conceptual understanding on. Finally, application courses offer students community-based experiences and applications of STEM teaching and learning in and out of schools. An optional research experience allows students to apply design-based research to address practical issues in education.
Graduates are prepared to lead in various formal and informal STEM learning environments (i.e., classrooms, curriculum design spaces, non-profits, museums) and be change makers in a variety of settings and workplaces (i.e., schools, philanthropy, higher education, local governments, community organizations). This will also prepare students for further graduate study in fields like the Learning Sciences, Education Research, Science and Technology Studies.
Drawing on Drexel’s experiential learning model, this M.S. program leverages university-community partnerships and experiential pedagogies to support learners in experiencing how STEM learning happens in a variety of settings. Through intentional experience with communities outside of Drexel, learners develop both the how and why for STEM education in their own communities.
