About the Program
The MS in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum program provides three concentrations: Secondary Certification Concentration: a master's degree with PA Instructional I certification to teach in the secondary grades (7 – 12) in a specific subject; Elementary Certification Concentration: a master's degree with PA Instructional I certification to teach in the elementary grades; and Advanced Track Concentration an options for teacher who already have their certification and are interested in furthering their teacher craft by focusing on a specific content or pedagogical practice.
Each of our Concentrations incorporate current research on teaching and learning and provides in-depth preparation in pedagogy, curriculum development, instructional design, scaffolding instruction for diverse learners, and use of technology in the classroom. Students are required to synthesize theoretical and practical knowledge through field work and opportunities to spend time in approved classroom settings. Certification candidates are required to complete supervised field experiences throughout the program, including a full-time student teaching experience. The Advanced Track Concentration allows certified teachers to explore and further develop their practice by engaging with current research and scholarly work. In addition, the flexibility in this concentration allows teachers to further specialize by including a PBC in areas such as Teaching English Learners, STEM education or Learning Analytics.
Upon completion of the program, students in the Secondary and Elementary Concentration course work, with a grade of B or better and 3.0 cum GPA, satisfactory participation in all required field-based experiences, and state licensure exams allows for recommendation for PA Instructional I certification. Our Advanced Track Concentration students will be equipped with skills that allow them to confidently take on new responsibilities or leadership roles in their schools or education settings. We also have a certification officer that can support candidates to understand the requirements to transfer their teaching licenses, once obtained, to other states.
Drexel’s program leverages a long history of experiential education to support a program that successfully blends theory and practice by making sure our students are in classrooms regularly and able to understand how to support students in many settings. Importantly, this program also works well for candidates seeking certification who are currently a lead teacher in their own classrooms and offers immediately applicable skills and understandings for their classrooms.
