About the Program

The systems engineering for software applications (SESA) graduate certificate provides a fundamental understanding of systems engineering principles and practices as applied to software design and development.

This graduate certificate is intended to enhance the skills of software engineers who work in areas of product design and development related to a variety of industries, but with a particular focus on the Department of Defense (DoD) and related business. In today’s environment, managing the complexity of hardware product development and software interface coding requires technical knowledge and know-how, as well as system engineering approaches with a focus on the product development lifecycle process. The courses associated with this certificate focus on software development but provide connection to development of hardware products and/or assets. The software enables integration and operation of the hardware and/or assets. Students will leverage this competency to provide systems engineering thinking paired with technical depth in software engineering design, development and integration. This pairing will enhance the skill set and talent of engineers who work in the field of hardware product design and development.

Courses completed in this certificate program can be applied to earning the Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering and / or most other master’s degree programs within the School of Engineering.

The systems engineering for software applications graduate certificate is affiliated with our nationally ranked systems engineering master’s degree program that prepares students for any systems engineering challenge.

The Drexel program has the following discriminators:
• The program is offered face to face and in asynchronous online modalities.
• The strength of our program is our faculty as all our instructors have extensive experience in industry.
• In addition to an experienced faculty, we have a strong Advisory Board that consist of Experienced personnel in industry that are functioning in various systems engineering positions. Through this advisory board, we have a strong connection to industry.
• Drexel's MS in Systems Engineering is certified by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). As such, graduates qualify for a Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) Certification from INCOSE in addition to earning an MS degree.
