About the Program

The Epidemiology Foundations Certificate provides a foundational skill set in epidemiologic and biostatistical methods for individuals seeking essential public health research and practice competencies. Designed for learners outside of public health who want to gain rigorous, applicable analytical tools, this part-time program introduces core concepts in disease distribution, measures of disease occurrence and association, study design, data interpretation, and causal reasoning.

Through coursework in Introduction to Epidemiology, Introduction to Biostatistics, and Intermediate Epidemiology, students develop the ability to calculate and interpret key epidemiologic measures, critically appraise health research, apply statistical techniques to real world data, and evaluate sources of bias, confounding, and random error. The curriculum equips students with the quantitative reasoning and methodological foundations needed to participate in public health studies and to support data-driven decision-making across a range of disciplines.

The certificate is offered entirely online to provide qualified students and working professionals with an opportunity to participate in this program regardless of restrictions in time and physical location. Those who successfully complete the certificate program and wish to broaden their scope of public health education could pursue an MPH or MS degree and apply some or all credits to that program.

For internal applicants: Graduate certificates are designed to provide specific depth within a student’s area of training or complement their training in a related discipline. All matriculated master's students in semester programs, except for students pursuing an MPH degree, are eligible to enroll.
 
Students must receive approval from their home program and the Dornsife School of Public Health and complete the necessary paperwork with the DSPH Academic Advising Team.
