Minor in Communication
About the Minor
The Minor in Communication is designed for students who want to develop a broad understanding of communication processes while strengthening their interpersonal, professional and public communication skills. It offers a flexible pathway for students from any major to explore how communication shapes social interaction, media environments, and public life.
The minor combines foundational coursework in communication theory, media and society, and models of communication with electives that allow students to tailor the program to their interests. These courses emphasize applied skills such as public speaking, professional and technical writing and communication in emerging and AI-mediated contexts, alongside opportunities to critically examine media systems, platforms, and contemporary communication issues.
The minor is particularly well suited for students seeking to improve their ability to communicate complex ideas, collaborate across disciplines and engage diverse audiences. It prepares students with analytical, writing and presentation skills that are valuable across a wide range of academic, professional and public settings.
Admissions Requirements
Students are required to declare a major before declaring a minor. Students admitted directly into a specific major at the time of matriculation may declare a minor beginning in their second semester. All requirements for the minor must be completed either concurrently with or prior to the completion of the primary major requirements. This ensures that students fulfill the expectations of their primary field of study while completing any additional areas of academic specialization.
