About the Minor

A minor in English trains students in the fundamental disciplinary skills required for literary exploration, sophisticated textual analysis, excellent writing, and other transferable expertise.

Students hone their skills in critical thinking, reading, communication, and creativity through a flexible range of courses that engage topics critical to success in tomorrow’s ever-changing world: the connection between oral, written, and digital modes of expression; analytical, ethical, and critical thinking; the relevance and relation of the past to the present; the relations between and among cultures; the role of literary and philosophical texts in our attempts to explain human motives and behavior; issues of personal and communal identity; and the connection of the literary arts to social change.

A minor in English offers students valuable training in textual analysis, in effective written communication, and in the imaginative and critical thinking, providing a foundational and well-rounded preparation for meaningful careers in any field.

Admissions Requirements

Students are required to declare a major before declaring a minor. Students admitted directly into a specific major at the time of matriculation may declare a minor beginning in their second semester. All requirements for the minor must be completed either concurrently with or prior to the completion of the primary major requirements. This ensures that students fulfill the expectations of their primary field of study while completing any additional areas of academic specialization.
