Minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies
About the Minor
Our trans-disciplinary program brings together historical, cultural, psychological, economic, political, and digital approaches to the study of gender and sexuality. The program takes a pluralistic approach to gender, sex, and sexuality as social categories and lived realities.
Courses analyze how knowledge is produced about and through experiences of gender, sex and sexuality that are necessarily negotiated by race, class, geography, embodiment, culture, and other factors.
Drexel’s minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies orients students toward practicing new skills in research and analysis to learn how to examine their own assumptions about culture and knowledge production. Through a range of courses that draw from both disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, our graduates gain experience in mobilizing a variety of methods as well as intellectual independence.
Students will learn how to construct their own meanings, develop their own lines of inquiry, and shape their environments to act justly as participants in—not just observers of–– our collective world. Careful study of the forces shaping our institutions, norms, and bodies prepares Gender and Sexuality Studies students to critically intervene in their chosen areas of focus.
Drexel students are known internationally for their preparedness for the professional world; the agility and critical acumen developed through transdisciplinary study in the Gender and Sexuality Studies program supports students in living up to this reputation.
Admissions Requirements
Students are required to declare a major before declaring a minor. Students admitted directly into a specific major at the time of matriculation may declare a minor beginning in their second semester. All requirements for the minor must be completed either concurrently with or prior to the completion of the primary major requirements. This ensures that students fulfill the expectations of their primary field of study while completing any additional areas of academic specialization.
