Minor in History of Capitalism

About the Minor

Through this minor, students explore the disputed definitions and chronologies of capitalism over time, investigating economic change with a deeply contextual approach. Students consider topics like commodification, finance, and government policies, but with an analysis profoundly rooted in the cultural underpinnings and changing social values over time. Among other topics, this minor encourages students to ponder the roles of slavery, imperialism, environmental resources, and democracy in understanding capitalist systems and varieties.

Open to all undergraduate students except history majors.

Admissions Requirements

Students are required to declare a major before declaring a minor. Students admitted directly into a specific major at the time of matriculation may declare a minor beginning in their second semester. All requirements for the minor must be completed either concurrently with or prior to the completion of the primary major requirements. This ensures that students fulfill the expectations of their primary field of study while completing any additional areas of academic specialization.
