Minor in Student Teaching Experience

About the Minor

The Student Teaching experience minor provides students from a variety of majors across the university with the skills, practices, and experience required for being a certified teacher.

Through a practice-based, experiential, 12-credit course tied to student teaching, students bridge theory and practice. Students learn, refine, and reflect on pedagogical skills and content as they student teach with a mentor teacher, using their experience with students in conjunction with the coursework. The course allows them to also learn from the experiences of their peers who share in a variety of modalities their own experiences, pedagogical skill development, and developing knowledge.

Students finish the minor fully eligible for certification in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which also has reciprocal agreements with a large number of states in the US.

The student teaching experience minor offers students opportunity to put their learning directly into practice while learning about content and pedagogies, offering a truly experiential learning experience. Building on the Drexel experiential educational approach, the coursework is designed to support community building and deep, collaborative, reflections from students.

Admissions Requirements

Students are required to declare a major before declaring a minor. Students admitted directly into a specific major at the time of matriculation may declare a minor beginning in their second semester. All requirements for the minor must be completed either concurrently with or prior to the completion of the primary major requirements. This ensures that students fulfill the expectations of their primary field of study while completing any additional areas of academic specialization.
