Minor in Product Design

About the Minor

Students in this minor—through a combination of applied lecture courses and integrated studio courses—learn to combine skills in creative problem solving with a visual and human-centered product design process. Students develop product concepts and collaborate on the development of product ideas, while learning discipline specific skills which are beneficial for design professionals.

The minor is specifically created to offer students a unique multi-disciplinary experience. Students will develop skills in the rapid visualization of ideas, creative problem solving, transformative design thinking, and an understanding of the product development process in a collaborative setting. Minor courses will address the creation and integration of new technologies, sustainability products, and socially responsible design, all of which are beneficial for design professionals.

This minor is offered to all students at the university having an interest in developing product ideas, including students from the School of Engineering, the LeBow College of Business, and the School of Biomedical Engineering and Science. This minor is also a valuable asset to any Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design student who want to add a product design focus to their design degree.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the minor in Product Design, a student must have declared a major, and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. No prerequisite courses are required. All minor courses will be offered in either the Fall or Spring semester. Only upon review by the faculty advisor for the minor will students with design credits from other institutions or departments be allowed to apply these to the requirements.

Students are required to declare a major before declaring a minor. Students admitted directly into a specific major at the time of matriculation may declare a minor beginning in their second semester. All requirements for the minor must be completed either concurrently with or prior to the completion of the primary major requirements. This ensures that students fulfill the expectations of their primary field of study while completing any additional areas of academic specialization.
