Minor in Studio Art

About the Minor 

The Studio Art minor allows students from across the university who are passionate about artmaking to develop their skills and artistic voice through a broad range of media and processes, including drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Studio courses are designed to build visual acuity, technical skill, and conceptual refinement, giving students the tools to develop an artistic practice that reflects their individual interests. The minor emphasizes hands-on making across both two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, ranging from screen-print, lithography and painting to woodworking, welding, and the use of digital fabrication technologies.

Students will also gain familiarity with the fields of contemporary art and craft, both in the studio and by engaging with Philadelphia’s thriving art community. Through these experiences, students will learn to situate their artwork within the historical and contemporary discourses of artmaking.

Students may also pursue a capstone experience in which they develop an individual body of artwork with a cohort of other Studio Art students and learn the fundamentals of creating and promoting an exhibition of their work.

Admission Requirements

Students are required to declare a major before declaring a minor. Students admitted directly into a specific major at the time of matriculation may declare a minor beginning in their second semester. All requirements for the minor must be completed either concurrently with or prior to the completion of the primary major requirements. This ensures that students fulfill the expectations of their primary field of study while completing any additional areas of academic specialization.

Students must complete twelve (12) credits of Studio and Advanced Studio courses, including at least one Studio course, and at least one Advanced Studio course based on the student's selection.
