Minor in Theatre

About the Minor 

Twenty-first-century employers want candidates with expertise in problem-solving, communication, teamwork, risk-taking, creativity, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace learning. These are all transferable skills that students learn and practice by taking theatre classes and working on theatre productions. Theatre classes inherently teach the “5 Cs”: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity, and Cultural Awareness. Students apply these pillars and gain hands-on experience as they work on studio and mainstage productions with opportunities for performance, technical production and/or administration. Students learn to tell stories, build community—and have fun doing it.

The Theatre minor consists of two distinct, yet closely integrated components: foundational studies and practical application which empowers students to discover and develop their own voice and style in their art as they study and work on theatrical productions. With practical, hands-on courses in Performance, Administration, and Technical Theatre, students can explore areas of interest, apply knowledge from other classes, develop their skills, and gain a deeper understanding, appreciation, and experience in the practical side of theatre.

Admission Requirements

Students are required to declare a major before declaring a minor. Students admitted directly into a specific major at the time of matriculation may declare a minor beginning in their second semester. All requirements for the minor must be completed either concurrently with or prior to the completion of the primary major requirements. This ensures that students fulfill the expectations of their primary field of study while completing any additional areas of academic specialization.
