NUPR 520 Nurse Practitioner Clinical Orientation Seminar 0.0 Credits

The Nurse Practitioner Clinical Preparation Seminar serves as a clinical orientation for all nurse practitioner students who will be starting their clinical practicum sequence of the nurse practitioner program. The course introduces students to the clinical support services, the clinical requirements of their specific population specialty, the clinical contracting process, and the clinical compliance process. Students engage in starting the process to complete their pre-clinical requirements, which fosters a seamless transition to their population-focused clinical course sequence.

NUPR 530 Introduction to Advanced Practice Nursing: Professional and Self Development 3.0 Credits

This course provides the necessary foundation for beginning nursing graduate students to learn skills necessary for formal academic success while also supporting their personal development as scholars and future advanced practice nurses. Students will be introduced to technologies needed for learning and writing. NUPR 531 Evidence-Based Practice: Processes, Structures and Impact 3.0 Credits

This course provides the student with the content expertise necessary to begin a trajectory of acquiring the skills and critical understanding needed for evidence-based practice, particularly as a developing advanced practice registered nurse. Clinical/practice questions are posed using problem, intervention, comparison, outcomes and time (PICOT) structures. Search construction strategies and web-based/data-based tools designed to retrieve published, peer-reviewed science as well as gray literature are addressed. The course offers students the foundation needed for making decisions about the applicability of research and professional work-products to nursing practice and to collaborative efforts with interprofessional colleagues.

NUPR 532 Appraising Quantitative Evidence: Research Designs and Methodologies I 2.0 Credits

This course addresses the quantitative research paradigm, focusing on the understanding of rigorous, well-constructed studies to inform evidence-based nursing. The research process and its major components are examined to prepare students for critically appraising quantitative studies. Students learn to identify threats to validity and to recognize Type 1 and 2 errors. Course content assists in accurately identifying research study designs to ensure critical appraisal tools are used to make decisions about the applicability and utility. Theoretical consistency is examined and high-frequency concerns, including power analyses, sampling plans, instrumentation selection, reliability and validity, are reviewed to prepare students to appraise, synthesize and apply research findings to practice problems.

NUPR 533 Appraising Qualitative Evidence: Research Designs and Methodologies II 2.0 Credits

This course addresses the qualitative research paradigm and focuses on developing students’ understanding of methodologically sound descriptive studies that contribute to evidence-based nursing practice. Naturalistic research study designs and methods are examined. Students explore strategies that ensure trustworthiness, including verification, audit trails, and, if appropriate, member and peer checks. Course content assists students in accurately utilizing critical appraisal tools for descriptive studies. Qualitative research is explored within the context of hierarchies of evidence. Students are familiarized with unique barriers to incorporating qualitative evidence into evidence-based practice and strategies for addressing these challenges.

This course is designed to build on prior pharmacologic study of actions and effects of drugs on the human system across the life span.
