This six-week course serves as an introduction to the clinical clerkships and seeks to equip students with the basic skills needed to succeed in the clinical years. This course will reinforce clinical skills including history-taking, note-writing and physical exam, as well as introduce broader topics relevant to modern clinical practice, such as usage of evidence-based medicine, management of psychosocial aspects of patient care, and practical approaches to common clinical conditions. This course will also address topics unique to being a clerkship student, including the need to balance studying, participation in clinical care, and emotional well-being.

This course will consist of 7 weeks of 2-hour substantive demonstration/performance classes that will take place from 6-8pm on Tuesdays. ATA Law and Medicine utilizes a mixed classroom model bringing together medical students and law students to facilitate analysis of medical malpractice cases from both the legal and medical perspectives. In the 2-hour class, students will learn how to analyze medical malpractice cases and prepare medical witnesses for depositions and trial. The topics of the course are based on advanced trial advocacy tactics, including opening and closing statements, direct, cross and redirect examination of lay and expert witnesses, and witness preparation.

This course will allow students the opportunity to review medical school curriculum through a lens of bias. Students will participate in a training session to understand types of bias and how to use the SUNY Upstate Bias Checklist. Additional training will be done through a facilitated review with feedback. Students will then be assigned to review specific curricular content using the checklist. Each student will have a faculty advisor throughout the rotation. At the conclusion of the rotation, students will present their findings (trends in bias; recs to remediate bias, etc.) to the group.
