AFAS 1001 Introduction to Africana Studies 3.0 Credits
Africana Studies, formally institutionalized in the late 20th century, is a dynamic intellectual project that expands ways of understanding the world through the critical study of historical and contemporary conditions, ideas, and experiences of African peoples globally, including people in the U.S. and the Caribbean. In this foundational course, students examine the discipline’s history, major scholars, central debates, and key theoretical and methodological frameworks. Alongside history, the course explores Africana sociopolitical thought, cultural expression, and intellectual traditions. Students develop skills for critically engaging fundamental questions about human existence and knowledge as well as core concepts shaping the Black experience, including race, class, consciousness, gender, and culture.
