This course examines the religious traditions, philosophies, and spiritual practices of people of African descent across Africa and the African Diaspora. Students explore Indigenous African religions, as well as the development of Africana expressions of Islam, Christianity, and other spiritual systems. Emphasis is placed on the historical, cultural, and social contexts that shaped these traditions, including chattel slavery, colonialism, migration, and resistance. Through critical readings and discussion, students analyze how Africana religious thought has influenced identity, community formation, ethics, and movements for social transformation in global contexts.
