AFAS 2201 Black Geographies 3.0 Credits

This course introduces students to the emerging field of Black geographies as theorized by scholars W.E.B. Du Bois, Katherine McKittrick, and Clyde Woods and as expanded through Black radicalism. Our journey centers the systems of thought, culture, and histories of Africana peoples while making various excursions into the disciplines of history, philosophy, literature, critical political geography, Black studies, and gender studies. This course engages students to think critically through, around, and with questions that explore the relationship between Africana cultural expressions, collective/everyday resistance, and uneven geographies. Prior coursework in Africana/Black Studies, geography, or history is recommended.
