AFAS 2250 African Histories of Independence 3.0 Credits
Between 1945 and the 1990s, several territories on the African continent engaged in liberation struggles from colonial powers. This course explores African independences by examining the diverse political, social and cultural struggles that led to the end of colonial rule across the continent. The course will move beyond the linear nationalist narratives to understand the role of workers, peasants, women, youth, intellectuals and militaries in shaping the paths to political independence. Students will consider the challenges of decolonization, state-building, citizenship, the economic and political contexts and the unmet expectations of freedom. The course will focus on understanding independence as an ongoing process, rather than a single moment in history.
