AFAS 3015 Black Noise: Experimental Literature, Culture, and Thought 3.0 Credits
This course examines experimental black culture, literature, and theory, taking stock of their fugitive qualities and rupturing implications. While the class gets its name from the abstract notion of “black noise” forwarded by Saidiya Hartman and Stephen Best, we will explore the actual noise of unruly black music, novels, film, short stories, visual art, poetry, and everyday expressive culture. Within it, we will also investigate scholarship bearing out the “wild” methodologies and analyses that inform these experimental expressions – from critical fabulation to mystic self-invention, from boundary-blurring black eco-poetics to a radical, everyday praxis of “deviance.”.
