AFAS 3030 Black Queer Literature, Culture, and Thought 3.0 Credits

Assuming queer as a verb, as an experience, as perspective, position, politics, and premise, this course utilizes a black queer lens to explore various issues including visibility, surveillance, and freedom; family and kinship; the body; queer place and space; spirituality; gender formation; normativity; the Law, and power relations; the co-constitutive relationship between sex/uality and race; principles and ethics of desire. To do this, this course will stage encounters with black queer thought, literature, and cultural production. Through these encounters, students will consider ways black queer ideology and practice challenge oppressive symbolic and structural institutions.
