AFAS 3170 US Civil Rights Movement and International Solidarities 3.0 Credits
This course examines the U.S. Civil Rights Movement (CRM) within a transnational framework. It highlights the international solidarities that shaped ideas, strategies, and impacts. The course explores how African American activists engaged with anticolonial struggles, human rights discourses, Pan-Africanism, and how movements abroad influenced domestic campaigns for racial justice. It analyses key figures, events and organizations, and connections to the seven continents. By situating the CRM in a global context, the course intends to develop a deeper understanding of freedom and democracy and racial and social justice as interconnected struggles. Students learn that these struggles transcend national borders and to this day continue to have resonances across the world.
