ARCH 3501 Structural Systems I 3.0 Credits

This course introduces the fundamentals of structural design in architecture with a focus on how structural considerations help enable and inform architectural design. It focuses on the basics of mechanics of materials, structural failure modes, loads that act on structures, and classifications of structural elements & systems. There is a heavy emphasis on unit analysis, basic structural calculations, and analytical problem solving. The course introduces the concepts of tributary area and load path, and leads into the fundamental concepts of engineering statics for beams, frames, and trusses. Students examine design considerations for typical construction materials, with emphasis on wood-framed systems.
