ARTH 1003 Contemporary Art 3.0 Credits

This introductory course examines how global artists since 1960 have innovated new visual communicative strategies to reflect and impact the world around them. We study how artists engage new media, technology, consumer culture, viewer participation, embodiment, gender, sexuality, race, imperialism, censorship, ecological imperative, the built environment, and globalization. The class covers Pop Art, Minimalism, Process Art, Land Art, Conceptual Art, Performance Art, Installation, Video Art, Digital Art, and more. We also critically examine the power systems that structure the art world including global biennales and museums. Students learn to interpret today’s salient images and objects mobilizing visual analysis and contextual understanding.

Through the Art History minor, students explore how artworks, designed objects, mass communication forms, and built environments shape and are shaped by their political, social, and personal contexts. Students develop skills in visual analysis, argument construction, and effective communication, while also expanding their knowledge of historical and contemporary discourses. Cross-cultural and interdisciplinary, the field of art history illuminates the diverse and global worlds we inhabit as well as the integral relationships between art, design, and lived experience. In our program, students learn how to explore these contexts critically and compassionately.
