ARTH 2005 Ancient to Medieval Art 3.0 Credits

This course explores global visual culture from ancient times to the early modern period, ca. 1500. Selected cultures from around the world are examined in terms of their regional traditions and interactions with other cultures. The historical use, value, and meaning of images, buildings, and artifacts will be analyzed in relation to social, political, economic, religious, intellectual, technological, and aesthetic developments. Attention will also be paid to how various cultural constructs affect the ways we interpret art.

Through the Art History minor, students explore how artworks, designed objects, mass communication forms, and built environments shape and are shaped by their political, social, and personal contexts. Students develop skills in visual analysis, argument construction, and effective communication, while also expanding their knowledge of historical and contemporary discourses. Cross-cultural and interdisciplinary, the field of art history illuminates the diverse and global worlds we inhabit as well as the integral relationships between art, design, and lived experience. In our program, students learn how to explore these contexts critically and compassionately.
