ARTH 2015 Modern Art 3.0 Credits

This course examines the transnational phenomenon of modern art from its origins to the mid-20th century, exploring how artists across the globe responded to modernity, colonialism, nationalism, migration, and globalization. Students learn about key movements, artists, and artworks in relation to cross-cultural exchange, revolution, and innovation across a wide range of materials and technical practices. This course approaches modern art as a network of interconnected histories shaped by political, social, and technological change and power.

Through the Art History minor, students explore how artworks, designed objects, mass communication forms, and built environments shape and are shaped by their political, social, and personal contexts. Students develop skills in visual analysis, argument construction, and effective communication, while also expanding their knowledge of historical and contemporary discourses. Cross-cultural and interdisciplinary, the field of art history illuminates the diverse and global worlds we inhabit as well as the integral relationships between art, design, and lived experience. In our program, students learn how to explore these contexts critically and compassionately.
