BMES 5722 Neuroimaging and Brain Computer Interfaces 3.0 Credits
This course introduces the foundations for measuring and interpreting brain signals and designing interactive neurotechnologies. Students survey major human neuroimaging modalities that capture brain structure and function, including MRI/fMRI, EEG, and fNIRS, emphasizing underlying physics and physiology, instrumentation, and data quality. Students learn visualization and analysis of multidimensional brain data, from preprocessing through feature extraction and interpretation. Building on these, students study brain computer interface (BCI) principles, including signal decoding to enable communication and control of external devices (computers, robots, assistive technologies). Clinical, translational, and everyday applications are discussed alongside limitations, ethics, and practical design tradeoffs.
Repeat Status: Not repeatable for credit
