CHE 5015 Spectroscopy for Engineers 3.0 Credits

This survey course prepares students to use spectroscopy for chemical and materials research and quality assurance testing of raw materials and products such as in the electronics and pharmaceuticals industries. Students will learn physical origins of optical transitions and implications for chemical bonding and electronic structure. Gas, liquid and solid-state materials will be considered, and spectral ranges explored from radio to X-ray. Survey will cover NMR, IR, Raman, UV-Vis, fluorescence and ellipsometry. Students will develop a working understanding of spectral and time resolution. Signal-to-noise ratios, linewidth, fitting and resolution will be discussed from an applications perspective. Projects will include numeric analysis of data and instrumentation design.
