CHEM 1020 General, Organic and Biochemistry 4.0 Credits
Introduction to fundamental principles of chemistry and their application to nursing and health sciences. This course covers physical and chemical properties of substances used in medical areas and related principles: atomic structure, chemical bonding, gases, solutions, acids and bases, and chemical reactions. The topics included in organic chemistry are hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, and other functional groups and polymers. Physical and chemical properties of these substances will be studied along with nomenclature and structural features. The biochemistry topics included are carbohydrates, fatty acids and lipids, amino acids and proteins, nucleic acids, and DNA. Physical and chemical properties of these molecules will be studied.
