CHP 5001 Theories of Social and Community Change in Public Health 3.0 Credits

Inspired by Kurt Lewin’s premise that “there is nothing more practical than a good theory,” and extended through Paulo Freire’s call for reflection and action to transform the world, this course examines social, behavioral, and community change theories that guide public health research and practice. Students explore ecological, cultural, and structural perspectives that shape health and well-being across individual, interpersonal, and community levels. Building from classic behavioral frameworks, the course integrates contemporary approaches to address social determinants of health and promote equity-driven community change. Through applied writing, case analyses, and design-based projects, students learn to analyze, integrate, and translate theory into action.
