COM 5530 Visual Communication 3.0 Credits

Ever since the invention of cave paintings, then further expanded with newer technologies such as paper, photography, moving picture, and electronic screens, visual elements have been at the core of effective mediated communication. This course explores the mechanisms of how visuals communicate messages, how to make sense of our society deeply embedded into the visual culture, and how we can effectively navigate in it as professional communicators. We will address topics ranging from visual perception, design principles all the way to visual politics on social media and coping with generative AI tools. Case analyses will include iconic photos, brand design, data visualization, and more. Although this is not a workshop-style course, some basic hands-on practices in visual storytelling will be included.
