COM 6140 Social Media that Matters 3.0 Credits
Social media platforms are increasingly volatile, and this course examines concepts that help explain how and why they change in today’s digital environment. Students explore ideas such as interactivity, convergence, big data, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence, while also evaluating the challenges and opportunities these shifts create. The course highlights the different values social media provides for companies and audiences and introduces a social media audit to distinguish between platform logics and user-centered logics. Students then consider how both approaches can be integrated to meet user needs. The course also examines information infrastructures and affordances through concepts like the attention economy and platformization, offering tools for deeper analysis of digital systems.
