CS 5210 Systems Programming 3.0 Credits

This course examines the interface between applications and the operating system kernel. Students analyze Unix/Linux system calls, tracing execution from userspace to the kernel to understand low-level behavior and design trade-offs. Key topics include process and thread management, signals and interrupts, advanced file I/O, virtual memory, IPC mechanisms, and network programming for scalable servers. Modern systems topics cover process isolation, namespaces, cgroups, and container fundamentals. Assignments include research paper reviews and programming projects to develop expertise in writing robust, high-performance systems software.
