DIGM 1010 Introduction to Media Studies 3.0 Credits

In this course, students will explore concepts and issues in the study of media, with a particular emphasis on entertainment media. This survey of key critical approaches in the study of media is rooted in case studies of pivotal technologies, including radio, film, digital computing, the internet, videogames, and more. Case studies ground us in the historical and material specificity of different media technologies and the cultures from which they arise and which they incite. Students will engage with critical historical and present-day debates about media, culture, and power. The goal of the course is to develop core competencies in reading, writing, and critical creative practices necessary for tomorrow's media makers.
