EDEX 5001 Foundations of Special Education Practice 3.0 Credits
This foundational course examines special education as a system of specialized instruction designed to address the developmental and learning needs of students with disabilities. Emphasis is on individualized planning, specially designed instruction (SDI), and data-driven decision-making. Candidates explore the characteristics of disabilities and how cognitive, physical, social-emotional, and behavioral development influences learning. The course covers the continuum of services, Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), and tiered systems of support, and introduces how assessment, instruction, and individualized planning connect through MDE and IEP. The focus is on structured learning environments, culturally responsive practices, collaboration, and evidence-based instruction.
