EDEX 6110 Special Education Advocacy 3.0 Credits
This course, grounded in IDEA, prepares students to become informed and skilled advocates for students with disabilities and their families. It supports the development of rights literacy, communication, and decision-making skills needed to navigate complex situations with clarity and integrity. Participants learn to recognize inequities, assist families who feel overwhelmed or unheard, and turn procedural protections into meaningful action. Through real-world scenarios, guided communication practice, and reflective skill-building, advocates develop an advocacy style that fits practical challenges and gain the confidence to pursue an advocacy pathway, whether by establishing an independent advocacy practice, enhancing advocacy within schools, or pursuing further study in special education law or policy.
