EDUC 602 Language Learning & Teaching 3.0 Credits

This course introduces participants to theory and practice in second language learning and instruction, and structured literacy, with a focus on English learners (ELs) in the level of primary and secondary education. The course explores how ELs acquire language, what factors influence the learning process, and how instruction could effectively facilitate language, culture, and content learning. Course readings focus on second language theory, research, literacy instruction, and practice. Topics include linguistic and learning theories, language teaching methods and approaches, the relationship between academic and social language, cultural issues surrounding language teaching and learning, and instructional practices in building English literacy proficiency. This course has a Stage 1 required field component.
