EOH 8002 Toxicology and Health Risk Assessment 3.0 Credits
This course examines the fundamentals of toxicology as a science and the applications of toxicology in environmental health. Students learn about the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of toxic agents in the human body. The course covers pathophysiological mechanisms and adverse health effects of major chemical toxicants (e.g., lead, benzene, silica), as well as important non-chemical hazards (e.g., radon, noise, heat). The relationship between dose (amount of toxicant in the body) and response (level of harm caused by the toxicant) will be utilized as a basis for assessing human health risks. Through case studies of toxicant exposures in environmental settings (air, water, food, workplace), students discuss whether risk management actions should be taken to prevent or mitigate harm.
Repeat Status: Not repeatable for credit
Restrictions: Can enroll if classification is PhD.
