EPI 6034 Public Health Surveillance 3.0 Credits
Monitoring population health is a core function of public health practice. This introductory survey course covers principles and practice of public health surveillance and statistical methods for monitoring health. Topics include planning surveillance systems, identifying data sources, managing information systems, ensuring data quality, descriptive epidemiology, evaluating surveillance, and state/local systems. Statistical methods include survey use, temporal and spatial pattern analysis, incubation periods, screening evaluation, disease clustering, outbreak detection, and ecologic inference. Examples will focus on monitoring HIV and other infectious diseases.
