ESTS 3255 Community Gardens as Learning Spaces 3.0 Credits

Community gardens are informal, community-centered, learning environments that connect to peoples’ food sovereignty, neighborhood beautification, and climate change action. Philadelphia is home to a wide variety of urban agricultural practices, as well as school and community gardens that are worth examining. In this course, learners will engage with a variety of community garden models – with examples from Philly -- and examine the ways they offer intergenerational learning opportunities. Through investigating and designing for learning in the social, material, cultural, and spatial practices woven into community gardening across the Philadelphia, learners will develop critical perspectives on alternative structures for STEM learning and societal applications of STEM Education.
