ESTS 5265 The Structure of Matter 3.0 Credits
Materials have a dramatic impact on all of our lives. New materials are incorporated in applications that range from biologically compatible implants to heat-resistant space shuttle tiles to high-speed electronic components in computers and cell phones. However, the publics' understanding of how these materials are conceived and developed is relatively limited. In this course, to support considering the role of materials in teaching and learning, students will develop understanding of relationships between the structure, properties, and function of modern materials. These relationships are applications of chemical and physical principles. The families of materials that will be studied include metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors and composites.
