ET 4270 Networking and Communication Technologies in Smart Manufacturing and IIoT 3.0 Credits

This course introduces computer networking fundamentals with emphasis on TCP/IP protocols, subnetting, and network architecture in industrial contexts. Students explore circuit-switched versus packet-switched networks, transport protocols (TCP vs. UDP), and routable (IP) versus local communication protocols (I2C, SPI, CAN). The course addresses network security challenges and mitigation strategies for industrial systems. Through hands-on laboratory exercises, students design and implement Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) devices communicating via TCP/IP with web-based interfaces for remote monitoring and control. This practical approach bridges networking theory with smart manufacturing applications, preparing students for Industry 4.0 environments.
